Trust, but diff
A landlord sends a “corrected” lease. A supplier reissues a quote. A counterparty returns the agreement with “just the date updated”. Maybe so — but a changed digit in a payment clause is invisible at reading speed, and side-by-side review of a long document is precisely the task attention fails at. A mechanical comparison checks every page pair the same way it checks the first: anything that moved, appeared, or vanished lights up, whether it’s a reworded clause, a swapped image, or an added stamp. The check is worth running on outgoing documents too — confirming that the version about to be signed matches the version reviewed last week.
Step by step: run the comparison
- Open the Compare PDF Files tool on SafeFileConvert and drop in both versions of the document. Name the files clearly beforehand — the tool compares whichever two you give it.
- Let the diff run. Both documents are rendered page by page at matching resolution, and corresponding pages are compared pixel by pixel.
- Read the results. Each changed page appears as a picture — the page in faded gray with every difference in red — plus a percentage of how much changed. Unchanged pages are listed without clutter, and pages that exist in only one document are flagged, with both page counts shown side by side.
- Download the full set of diff images as a ZIP if you want a record for your files or review notes. The images make a compact trail of exactly what you approved.
What it catches, and what lights up anyway
Because the comparison is visual, it catches everything that affects the rendered page — and it works on scans, which text-based diff tools can’t read at all. The flip side is honest too: a purely cosmetic reflow, like a font substitution shifting every line, also lights up, because visually it is a change. If a page shows differences everywhere, suspect reflow before foul play — then read the red areas to confirm.
